Rainwater basin in Villa Guardia (Italy)

HDPE-lined Box Culverts allow the correct functioning of the spillway, which is put to the test by the contribution of solid materials during the rain events

COPREM's HDPE-lined Box Culverts form a basin for the separation of first rainwater, with the bottom and walls covered by the HDPE T-Grip liner and the welded joints, protecting the concrete from chemical aggression for more than 100 years.

In agreement with the company Alto Lura, public company that manages the collection and purification of wastewater in the area of Como, the Municipality of Villa Guardia is planning the redevelopment of the area related to the consortium spillway.

The area affected by the intervention is located in a depression consisting of a set of land sown with grassland bordered to the south by the municipal road, to the east by a strip of forest and to the north and west by the valley of the aforementioned canal, a tributary of the river Fossato that, in the municipality of Lurate Caccivio, flows into the river Lura.

Just upstream of the area in question there is the consortium spillway, which separates the beginning of the collector owned by Alto Lura and the end of the municipal mixed sewer. This spillway, recently built, is equipped with a self-regulating mechanism of the flow rates derived downstream with the final section of the channel ducted that seems to present disposal problems in the most intense flows and needs an adjustment.

157 m3 rainwater separation basin, with pumping system for automatic emptying. The holes allow both maintenance operations and access to the bottom of the basin. Vehicles can pass over the basin.

HDPE-lined Box Culverts internally measuring 600x175x207 cm were used for the realization of the basin. These products are covered with HDPE liner, which is perfectly integrated in the concrete casting.
In particular:

  • 9 HDPE-lined Box Culverts measuring 600x175x200 cm - thickness 25 cm (weight: 21,650 kgs each)
  • HDPE-lined Box Culverts measuring 600x235x150 cm and 600x175x150 cm - thickness 25 cm - both including closing lateral walls (total weight: 22,250 kgs each)
  • 5 60x60-cm openings and 2 80x120-cm ones in the upper slab for both the introduction of the electropumps and the inspection of the basin
  • 1 opening diam. 315 mm for the inlet of a pipe

Advantages

The HDPE Lining System makes these advantages possible:
  • no infiltrations and fissures in the pipe
  • absolute resistance to chemicals
  • absolute abrasion resistance
  • great elasticity: the elongation at break of more than 600% compensates for any settlements of the pipeline
  • high adhesion of the liner to the concrete: the detachment resistance exceeds 38,000 kg/sq.m.
  • welding verification by scintillator
  • self-cleaning for limited internal friction
  • preservation of the characteristics of the project for more than 100 years
